More about Golfing Breaks in Troon

Ayrshire has over 40 golf courses, but it’s The Royal Troon, Turnberry and Prestwick, which are previous and future hosts of the Open Championship, that put Ayrshire on the golfing map.

Royal Troon has two fabulous courses, the Old Course and the Portland Course. The Old Course is the most famous of the two and is a traditional out and back links course, rated amongst the best in the world due to sheer challenge of the course itself coupled with the picturesque views. On a clear day, you can see the impressive mountains on the Isle of Arran to the west and the distant Ailsa Craig to the south.

The reason why Royal Troon is world renowned is because it has been selected to host the prestigious Open Championship eight times in the past and will be hosting the tournament in 2016. Past Open champions at Royal Troon include Justin Leonard, Mark Calcavecchia, Tom Watson, Tom Weiskopf, and Arnold Palmer. The last six Opens at Troon have been won by Americans, a British or European player hasn’t won at Royal Troon since Arthur Havers in 1923.

It boasts both the longest (6th hole) and shortest holes (8th hole) used at Open Championships. The 8th has earned the nickname “the postage stamp” because of how accurate your tee shot needs to be. The 18th hole is overlooked by the Royal Marine Hotel which is one of the reasons why the hotel is so popular for golf breaks in Ayrshire. Although short, it can take anything from a wedge to a 3 iron to reach the green due to the variable wind conditions. It’s this type of challenge that has been enticing golfers to test their skills on the course since it was founded in 1878.

Turnberry was last used as Open Championship venue in 2009 and is a 30-minute drive from the Marine Hotel. It’s most famous course is the Ailsa and the “lighthouse hole” is one of the most iconic holes in golf.

Prestwick is the birthplace of the Open Championship after it hosted the inaugural tournament in 1860. Seven of the original twelve greens used in the 1860 Open Championship are still in use and the course, on a day when the wind and rain gets up, provides the stiffest of golfing challenges. The course is a ten-minute drive from Marine Hotel Troon and is a must-visit for golfing historians.

In Ayrshire, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to what courses to play during your short golf break in Scotland. Whether you decide to play one of the major courses like Royal Troon, Turnberry and Prestwick or lesser-known, but equally impressive courses like; Kilmarnock Barassie, Irvine Bogside, Dundonald Links and the quirky Girvan, you’ll go home with fantastic memories and probably a few less golf balls!
