The Celtic Manor Resort, Newport – 5  Star

Set in 2,000 acres of glorious parkland at the gateway to Wales, the Celtic Manor Resort boasts three magnificent championship golf courses including the Twenty Ten, the stage for Europe’s dramatic Ryder Cup victory in that year.

No golf fan will ever forget Graeme McDowell with his arms aloft after holing his crucial birdie putt on the 16th hole or the rapturous scenes of celebration that followed when he sealed the triumph on the next green.

The spectacular Twenty Ten Course was purpose-built for the drama of team match play with water featuring on nine of the 18 holes and risk-and-reward challenges lurking around every corner.

From lacing up your shoes at the same lockers which still carry the name plaques of the Ryder Cup players to a post-round drink on the clubhouse balcony where Europe sprayed champagne over their supporters, there is a special atmosphere to every moment on the Twenty Ten Course.

Celtic Manor’s premier course is backed up by two more beautifully-manicured layouts – Roman Road and The Montgomerie – adding up to a rich and varied treat for the golfing connoisseur.

The apres-golf is every bit as memorable with luxurious accommodations, sparkling spa facilities, family activities including adventure mini golf and treetop ropes courses, as well as no fewer than eight restaurants to choose from as your 19th Hole.

Rooms all have a TV with satellite channels and free wi-fi which can also be accessed from public areas. There is a 24-hour front desk.

Local Golf
Royal Porthcawl

Only 50 minutes from the Resort and described as being one of the twelve finest courses in the world by the late Tom Scott, a leading writer on golf and former editor of Golf Illustrated, the course has a magnificent setting sloping down to the seashore.

The absence of sand hills usually found on links courses enables the golfer to see the sea from every hole and to enjoy memorable views south to Somerset and Exmoor, and northwest across Swansea Bay to the Gower Peninsula. With holes facing into every point of the compass, the player is always tested by the wind and will probably need every club in the bag. Visit Royal Porthcawl’s  Website

Southerndown

No trees or water hazards, just bracken, gorse, bunkers and wind! 40 minutes from the Resort is Southerndown golf course and amongst its various attractions are the four Par 3’s, each with its own distinctive character and challenges. Even if you have survived all the Par 3’s, a testing finish still awaits you, with 3 of the last 4 holes played into the prevailing wind.

Pars on 16, 17 and 18 are always an achievement and a tee shot over the gorse on to the split-level fairway of the 18th will set you up for an unforgettable finish. Visit Southerndown’s  Website

Pyle and Kenfig

Pyle and Kenfig golf course, affectionately known as ‘P & K’ with its lofty sand dunes hugging the South Wales cost of Porthcawl is situated in a wonderful stretch of golfing country. Glorious views and historic associations adorn this undulating course with its natural hazard of hillocks, valleys and towering dunes.

Only 45 minutes from the Resort, Pyle and Kenfig is a must to include in your South Wales golf itinerary. View Pyle and Kenfig’s  Website

Pennard

Pennard links golf club is worth the two hour drive to Swansea in the Gower Peninsula, voted an area of outstanding natural beauty. The holes at Pennard are routed over classically undulating and tumbling linksland, full of hummocks, hillocks and hollows and pocked with dunes large and small; in sum, exactly what you might hope to find beside the shore.

Yet this exceptional terrain is not beside the shore – it is two hundred feet above it, giving the course its reputation to be known as “the links in the sky”. View Pennard’s  Website

Ashburnham

Overlooking Carmarthen Bay, Ashburnham is one of the classic Welsh links courses. The course has its first two and final two holes inland near the clubhouse. Holes three to eight strike out, parallel to the sea, straight into the prevailing wind and holes nine to fifteen run back with the wind directly behind.

Ashburnham is less than 90 minutes from the Resort. View Ashburnham’s  Website
