Located in Maricopa, Arizona, about 45 minutes from Scottsdale, Ak-Chin Southern Dunes is near the Gila River Indian Reservation and well worth the drive. The numerous deep bunkers and thick grasses add difficulty to the course. Wider fairways are a welcomed break from the narrow target style courses in the city. Wide fairways result in smaller greens, and golfers will be able to exercise their short game skills, as well as challenge themselves on their birdie putts. Schmidt and Curley placed a lot of emphasis on bunker creation, in efforts to make Ak-Chin Southern Dunes more like the Australian links style and their flash bunkers can be seen all over the course.
